چکیده

The objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that titanium dioxide (TiO2) can function as a photocatalytic compound when used in the preparation of warm-mix asphalt (WMA). The proposed asphalt mixture would combine the benefits of WMA such as reduced energy consumption and emission during production with the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 to trap and degrade organic and inorganic particles in the air. Two application methods were evaluated, using TiO2 as a modifier to asphalt binder in the preparation of WMA and applying TiO2 to the pavement surface as a water-based solution. Results of the experimental program indicated that the use of TiO2 as a modifier to asphalt binder was not effective in removing NOx pollutants from the air stream; however, the application of TiO2 as part of a water-based spray coating achieved a NOx reduction efficiency ranging from 39 to 52%.

A Study to Assess the Effect of Asphalt Mixture on the Photocatalytic Performance: A Simulation

This study reports the simulation of a photocatalytic system process and the photocatalytic property of self-cleaning asphalt concrete (SCAC) with four typical asphalt mixtures. A photocatalytic system was simulated based on the pollutant concentration data, which were collected on three types of city roads. Two photocatalytic indexes were proposed to evaluate the photocatalytic property of sel...

Modification of the Properties of Warm Mix Asphalt Using Recycled Plastic Bottles

Construction of flexible pavements with hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures consumes huge energy which impacts the resources and the environment of the world. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is an effective alternative as they produced with lower mixing and compaction temperature than those used in HMA production. This technology decreases energy consumption, saves money, and reducing the environmental pollu...

Investigation of Rutting Performance of WMA Mixtures Containing Copper Slag

Copper slag (CS) is an abrasive blasting grit made of granulated slag from metal smelting processes. As copper slags are known to be waste material and cause a lot of environmental problems, it would be a good idea to use them in different sections of industry such as pavement construction. On the other hand, in order to save energy and reduce the amount of pollutants re...

Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of the cement treated Cold-in-Place Recycled Asphalt Mixtures

Cold-in-place recycling (CIR) is an environmentally sustainable alternative for preservation of asphalt pavements. A major disadvantage of this practice is the lower strength of the cold-in-place mixtures. Addition of cement into this type of mixture is a method for increasing its bearing capacity. The effect of cement content on the mechanical properties of the cold-in-place recycled asphalt m...

Technical Effects of Air Cooled Blast Furnace Slag on Asphalt Mixtures

Air cooled blast furnace slag is a by product made of gradually air cooled molten blast furnace slag and is often stored in stockpiles near the iron mills and usually occupy a wide area around the iron mills. From this perspective the further use of these materials can have its own merits. Air cooled blast furnace slag can be used in asphalt mixtures because of their proper frictional propertie...
